Epilog:

That first date went pretty well. Dancing with someone who really knows you can be very enjoyable. And Chuck and Barbara were a lot of fun to be around too.

Then came a second date two weeks later. And after that dates almost every weekend. Before anybody realized it they started meeting for lunch too. They'd both changed, grown, he'd been and reborn in a day, it took her a couple of years. Luckily they were able to find each other again after coming through the fire.

About nine months later they had a big family dinner to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their wedding. The next day they left for a week-long vacation to Hawaii.

While they were gone, Kate and Sean moved all of Marie's stuff into Gary's condo. It was Gary's surprise present for Marie. When they got back he told the cabby to take them straight to his place. Marie could not possibly have hugged or kissed him any harder to see her stuff arranged as if it has always been there.

Two grandmothers got together for lunch the next day and had a good, long, happy cry together...

I feel that some partners that fall into the cheating category are genuinely once-off occurrences understanding the damage they incurred, and highly unlikely to tread that path again.

So, in essence, there are two types of people. Some that continually change and others that remain the same (best seen say, from friends you've not seen in ages).

This story is a testament to those people that evolve.

I’ve just reread this story. Here on Literotica the stories usually wind up in either the BTB or the RAAC categories. Sometimes the can’t be so easily defined. This story kinda wound up in BOTH. I doubt in real life he would torch his own house, if the cops got him or a firefighter or bystander got hurt… he would be in jail for some time. Easier to just hire a demolition contractor and smash everything with big machines, no muss and no fuss… but for a story, a fire is perfect to kinda illustrate the MCs feelings, so everyone understands it’s for the story. He kinda French fried his ex wife’s feelings with the fire as well. To take that story arc and flip it around into a story about forgiveness was a tall order. Everyone by now knows that I detest RAAC stories. Having said that, this one wasn’t too horrible, He kinda telegraphed his intentions by having a chat with his ex and the denouement of the burn the bitch episode. From the ashes of that, he rekindles a relationship with his ex. Impossible? No. Unlikely? Absolutely. But it’s just a story. Weirder things have happened.

Was great until the very end where they dated and got back together. Being betrayed for that long... no way he would be able to trust her again.

I get the idea that they're "different people" but she went on to swap with clients and sold herself out. Three years three times a week?

Nope.

The reconciliation doesn't land for me. Or the idea that he "stayed pure" and didn't date much. The scales feel off for that. The build up and the plan feels great. But the story doesn't really address her remorse in a satisfactory manner. No real catharsis there. And there's no in the moment regret, it's mechanical.

Marie at no point seems genuinely sad, only sad at what's been lost. There's no active sense of licence vanishing or a closure / ending for her and Steve that demonstrates distance. The final piece makes the MC feel like a different character. Why would he WANT her back? What about her would he even like / love? The memory of their time together?

The characters reasons don't match the earlier part even with therapy. I can see him wanting closure / answers but the jump from no contact to wanting to talk feels too sudden, even with the time lapse. I think maybe forgiving her is... Doable. But the reconciliation needs so much more buildup and time to even be remotely considered.
